What is misfuelling?

Misfuelling is when you accidentally fill up your tank with the wrong sort of fuel. It’s worryingly easy to add the wrong fuel to your car, especially if you own a diesel vehicle. This is because unleaded petrol pump nozzles are smaller than diesel nozzles, so they fit into the fuel tank without resistance.

How common is it?

With an increasing number of households owning multiple cars that use different fuel types, accidents are becoming more commonplace, with around 400 people misfuelling each day – that’s 150,000 people each year. A moment’s inattention can lead to a costly mistake…

Diesel misfuelling is increasing in the UK as the sale of diesel cars has dramatically increased over the last decade; cases of misfuelling have more than doubled in the last ten years.

Does car insurance cover misfuels?

Misfuelling isn’t included in most insurance policies by default; you usually have to ask for it to be added to your policy as an optional extra.

If you’re thinking of purchasing car insurance with us and you’d like to add misfuelling cover to your policy, let us know. Without specific cover for misfuelling, putting the wrong fuel in your car can be extremely costly to deal with; it’s estimated that the cost to drain petrol, repair parts and replace diesel fuel can come to anything up to £5,000 all told.

The repairs needed after fuel is drained may not be covered by insurance, warranties or breakdown cover without the right policy in place.
